Kit Kat Bars and PR

Q: How to do PR right?

A: Think outside of the box!

There is always a 5k to plan and the usual social media content to be posting. The key to being successful at PR is thinking outside of the box.

Q: What do you mean by this?

A: Do something that is out of the norm and would catch someone’s eye.

Example: Just recently I was scrolling through my twitter feed and I saw a photo of a young man sitting in a car filled with Kit Kats. A car packed full of chocolate is precisely my idea of thinking outside of the box. The post immediately caught my attention, so I clicked on it and read more.

The young man apparently posted a photo on social media of a note that was left on his car from a stranger explaining that they saw that he had left his car unlocked, and they really wanted the Kit Kat bar in his cup holder.

This person stole only the chocolate bar, while leaving everything else that was in the car untouched. While things could be worse, if someone had stolen my chocolate I would be a little down too.

Enter the PR heroes of the story.

Hershey, my lovely out of the box thinkers, saw this and thought that it would be sweet of them to send a representative over with 6,500 Kit Kat bars for the young man. He thought this was hilarious and shared it all over the internet and the post went viral.

This, my friends, is how to do PR right. I love that Hershey took something that wasn’t even their fault and saw an opportunity there. PR is making the world a better place in surprising ways that will leave a lasting impression.

Go ahead, think outside of the box. Give someone 6,500 chocolate bars.

You won’t regret it.
